Job Description:

An ambitious, rapidly-growing generative AI start-up in New York is seeking an experienced AI/Machine Learning (ML) Engineer to join as one of the founding team members. This early-stage company is focused on building cutting-edge AI platforms that deliver meaningful, real-world impact, and is offering a rare opportunity to contribute to its growth and shape the direction of its technology from the ground up.

The successful candidate will take on a high-responsibility role, developing and deploying production-scale AI systems and LLM-powered solutions. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong foundation in ML, experience working in high-growth start-up environments, and a desire to drive innovation within a mission-led organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement production-scale AI systems with a focus on performance and reliability
  • Lead architectural decisions for AI/ML infrastructure
  • Build and optimise LLM-powered features using techniques such as RAG and custom fine-tuning
  • Develop evaluation frameworks and model monitoring systems
  • Collaborate with domain experts to turn complex requirements into scalable AI solutions
  • Design and maintain robust data pipelines for model training and inference
  • Deploy and maintain ML systems in production environments with high reliability

Candidate Requirements:

Core AI/ML Expertise:

  • Extensive experience in machine learning and deep learning architectures
  • Strong understanding of transformer models (e.g. BERT, GPT) and practical implementation
  • Hands-on experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems
  • Proficient in Python and ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Experience with prompt engineering, LLM optimisation, model evaluation and A/B testing
  • Proven success in developing and scaling production-ready AI systems

Software Engineering & Infrastructure:

  • Solid experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their AI/ML services
  • Expertise in building and maintaining data pipelines
  • Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices
  • Strong skills in API development and system architecture
  • Proficient in SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g. Datadog, CloudWatch)

Product & Domain Knowledge:

  • Background in regulated industries is highly advantageous
  • Understanding of compliance, data governance, and security requirements
  • Strong product sensibility and ability to prioritise feature development
  • Comfortable working in agile environments with evolving priorities

What Will Make You Stand Out:

  • Experience deploying AI systems in production
  • Open source contributions to ML projects
  • Exposure to MLOps and maintaining production ML infrastructure
  • Background in large-scale data systems
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers

This is an exciting opportunity for an AI/ML Engineer to join a high-calibre team in a role with significant autonomy, influence, and technical challenge—at a company where engineering excellence and innovation are paramount.
