In todays edition of People Behind the Brand, the series where you get to know the Orbis team, we sit down with Cloud consultant Rowan Hardy to chat about her journey, the ups and downs of recruitment and some life lessons gained from working abroad.

People behind the brand: Rowan Hardy
Tell us about your journey to recruitment…

I think I had a similar situation to quite a few people where I did kind of fall into recruitment but at the same time it was a ‘purposeful fall’ if that’s a thing! I knew I didn’t want to settle for just any agency, I wanted to make sure that it felt like the right move for me. I started to do some research and actually first spoke to a rec to rec who if I’m being completely honest didn’t give the greatest account of recruitment but I knew it was something I still wanted to pursue. I was then introduced to Orbis by a mutual friend actually and after meeting quite a few people when I came into the office for my interview, I got a great feel of the company and I could immediately picture myself working alongside everyone.

What’s the best part of the job?

I would say the best part or definitely the most rewarding part is making placements, mainly because obviously recruitment is a meritocratic job and so you know by making a placement that your hard work has paid off and your efforts will be rewarded. It also helps that along the way though there is a massive amount of support from everyone, I think you can really tell how we all want to see each other succeed.

What’s the biggest challenge?

Recruitment can be a bit up and down at times especially at the beginning or it might feel like you have these periods of ‘bad luck’ and so I think it’s important to be able to stay focused and just carry on doing the basics and doing everything properly because then success will follow.

What’s something you wish you’d known at the start of your career?

I think I did kind of know this anyway but maybe I wish I’d believed it more which is that it’s highly likely that any situation you’ve been in or any problem you’ve faced is probably something that most recruiters have dealt with at some point in their career and even the top billers now would have had the same struggles in their 1st year.

In another life… If you weren’t a recruiter, what would you be doing?

Honestly I’m really not sure! I toyed with the idea of being a lawyer whilst I was at university but I feel really grateful that I have found a career that I enjoy.

Your highlight of working for Orbis so far?

I’d say the people and also the culture that Orbis have created. I think we have such a positive work environment that allows everyone to explore the side of recruitment they enjoy the most! I’ve loved moving over to the Account Management path over the last 6 months and I’m currently working towards being promoted too so I think that will be my next big highlight!

You worked abroad as a translator in Barcelona – what an experience! Any life lessons you brought back with you?

I think the main thing would say/advice I would give would be, especially whilst at university, just to take every opportunity that you get because you might find something you love or even if you don’t love it, it might help steer you towards what you want to do. I absolutely loved living in Barcelona, I lived with 2 of my best friends but at the same time I wouldn’t want to move out there permanently and whilst working as a translator in a law firm was an amazing opportunity, I think it probably pushed me into looking into recruitment because I knew then that law wasn’t really for me.
