Senior Engineer (Mobile)

Senior Engineer – Mobile (React Native) – up to ~$150,000 base

Washington, DC or NYC (hybrid)

This is a senior mobile role with real influence.

A long-established, subscriber-funded national publication is continuing to invest in its app and is looking for a Senior Engineer to help define what the next phase of that mobile experience looks like.

The foundation is strong. The opportunity now is to build deeper engagement — interactive features, smarter personalisation, and product capabilities that bring readers closer to the journalism. This is build-focused work, not maintenance.

You would work directly with Product and Design, shaping ideas early, making architectural decisions, and owning features through to release across iOS and Android.

What you’ll be doing

• Leading development of new features in React Native
• Shipping and evolving production iOS and Android apps
• Integrating mobile experiences with backend services (Python preferred)
• Contributing to cloud-based infrastructure (AWS or GCP), CI/CD and containerised environments
• Participating in on-call rotation to maintain reliability
• Mentoring engineers and influencing engineering standards

What they’re looking for

• 6+ years software engineering experience
• 3+ years building and maintaining production apps in React Native
• Strong JavaScript / TypeScript
• Experience shipping to both iOS and Android
• Cloud infrastructure exposure (AWS or GCP), CI/CD
• Swift (iOS) experience strongly valued
