Lead Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: London, West End (5 days in office)

Salary: Circa £120,000 base

We are partnered with a high-performance FinTech working on large-scale distributed systems and real-time data platforms. The business operates at significant scale where system reliability, performance, and strong backend architecture are critical.

As part of continued growth, they are looking to hire a Lead Node.js Engineer to strengthen backend expertise, improve service architecture, and help elevate engineering standards across the organisation.

The Role

This is a hands-on Lead engineering position focused on improving and evolving a predominantly Node.js backend ecosystem.

You will play a key role in addressing technical debt, improving service design, and raising the bar for engineering quality across multiple teams working on core backend systems.

The environment is fast-moving and pragmatic. The expectation is that senior engineers identify problems and improve them rather than simply maintaining existing systems.

Technical Environment

  • Node.js (core backend stack)
  • Gradual movement toward Golang
  • Distributed backend services
  • Systems focused on data ingestion, indexing and API connectivity
  • Large-scale, real-time data infrastructure

Technical profile

  • Strong hands-on backend Node.js experience
  • Deep understanding of service architecture and scalable backend design
  • Comfortable improving existing patterns and addressing technical debt
  • Experience working in distributed systems environments

Seniority

  • Clear Lead-level engineer
  • Comfortable influencing engineering standards across teams
  • Able to operate independently and raise the technical bar

Compensation

  • Base salary around £120,000 + Bonus

If you are a strong Node.js specialist who enjoys improving real systems and raising engineering standards, this is a genuinely high-impact Lead role within a high-performing engineering environment.

At Orbis Group, we are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workplace. Research indicates that candidates, especially from underrepresented backgrounds, often hesitate to apply for jobs if they don't meet every qualification.

If you're excited about a role but don't perfectly align with every requirement, we encourage you to apply. Your unique skills and experiences may be the perfect fit for the job or other opportunities that arise.
