Role Summary

As a Senior IoT Hardware Engineer, you will be involved in end-to-end design and development, including embedded firmware design and over-the-air update capabilities.

They are looking for a senior individual who is familiar with Cellular IoT, peripheral handling via I2C, SPI, and UART, as well as managing STM32 and M3 processors with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

Key responsibilities

Hardware Design and Development:

  • Design and develop hardware for portable IoT devices with a focus on geolocation technologies and Cellular IoT.
  • Integrate UWB, GNSS/ RTK, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC modules, and cellular modems.
  • Manage I2C, SPI, and UART communication interfaces to control various peripherals, including GSM modem from a central STM32 processor.
  • Implement power management solutions to ensure efficient operation, targeting a sleep current in the 20-100μA range.
  • Prototype and test hardware components, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and specifications.
  • Perform design verification and validation for custom hardware.

Firmware Development:

  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware for IoT devices, focusing on efficient and reliable operation using STM32 processors.
  • Implement and manage geolocation algorithms and protocols for accurate positioning.
  • Ensure seamless integration of communication protocols (UWB, GNSS, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC) and manage interaction via AT commands and I2C registers.
  • Develop firmware for controlling E-ink screens, handling audio (Piezo, Speakers, BT Audio), NFC, BLE, WiFi, and UWB functionalities.
  • Implement OTA update capabilities for firmware upgrades, ensuring the code is reliable and scalable across hundreds of thousands to millions of devices.
  • Maintain firmware primarily in C++, adhering to best practices and using -Werror to enforce code quality.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient C++ code.
  • Utilize ADO for planning, task management, and tracking project progress.
  • Engage in architecture and design discussions, evaluate new technologies, and make critical decisions in collaboration with the CEO, hardware team, and key customers.
  • Collaborate with the cloud team to ensure data is delivered to end users in a power and cost-efficient manner.
  • Work closely with electronics/PCB designers to develop specifications and assist in schematic design processes.

Experience Required

  • 5+ years of experience in hardware design and firmware development for portable IoT devices.
  • Proven track record in designing and implementing systems with UWB, GNSS & RTK, WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC.
  • Extensive experience with Cellular IoT, managing peripherals through I2C, SPI, and UART, and familiarity with STM32& M3 processors.
  • Experience with power management and battery-operated devices, aiming for low sleep current operation.
  • Demonstrable experience in embedded firmware development in C++, including OTA capabilities and handling large-scale deployment.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in hardware design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, KiCad, Cadence).
  • Expertise in communication protocols and standards for geolocation and IoT, with a focus on AT commands and I2C register interactions.
